Action Alert: Tell La Mesa City Council: NO DIGITAL BILLBOARDS IN OUR COMMUNITY!

9/25/2023

We need your help to prevent the approval of new, illegal digital billboards in La Mesa!
The La Mesa City Council will be meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, September 26, to once again discuss the issue of digital billboards. This is after the City Council voted 3-2 not to support new digital billboards! We must tell the City Council not to go back on their prior vote, and insist that they listen to the community!
In addition to being illegal by letter of the law, the proposal presents several other issues:
  1. The proposed location of these billboards on I-8 is one of the busiest sections of highway in the city, presenting a dangerous level of distraction to drivers not used to seeing these illuminated signs.
  2. This proposal seems to ignore the due diligence and fact finding necessary for such a project. The City Council should commission a study to investigate the implications on traffic, safety, land ownership, as well as the established laws preventing digital billboards.
  3. By submitting the proposal through an RFP process, the ad hoc subcommittee is effectively selling the beauty of La Mesa county to the highest bidder.
Please click the button below to submit a public comment to the City Council stating your opposition to this proposal. Comments will close 24 hours prior to the meeting, so please submit your comments by 6 PM Pacific on Monday, September 25.

Despite receiving hundreds of messages in opposition, the San Diego City Council voted Tuesday, 7:2, to proceed with digital ad kiosks. Thanks to Councilmembers Joe LaCava and Vivian Moreno for voting "No!"  Scenic San Diego is hopeful an organization defending the public's best interests will mount a legal challenge to this abandonment of San Diego's historic role fighting outdoor advertising blight. Many thanks to everyone who voiced their opposition. Updates to follow.

La Mesa Fights Back Against Digital Billboards

On July 25, the City Council of La Mesa, California, took a significant stand against the installation of dual-sided digital billboards adjacent to Interstate 8 near the interchange with State Route 125. The proposed project by outdoor advertiser Clear Channel Outdoor faced strong opposition from councilmembers and the public alike, resulting in a three-to-two vote against proceeding with the plan.

La Mesa activists, Scenic America, and Scenic San Diego mobilized a grassroots advocacy effort in the days leading up to the vote. This effort resulted in a strong showing of opposition, which ultimately led to the City Council’s three-to-two vote to kill the proposal.

Scenic San Diego Letter in Opposition: IKE Collects and Shares/Sells Kiosk Users’ Personal Information

7/15/2023

Honorable Councilmembers,
Now that this proposal is before you for a new first reading, Scenic San Diego urges each Honorable Councilmember to review this proposal with a fresh eye, and reject it in its present form.
Additional information in your agenda packet continues to leave unanswered, and intentionally obfuscate, important reasons you should reject this drastic departure from years of national leadership in limiting outdoor advertising sign proliferation in our beautiful city of San Diego.

IKE Collects and Shares/Sells Kiosk Users’ Personal Information with “Third Party Partners”
Scenic San Diego has entered into the record for this meeting images from IKE’s digital ad kiosks in Berkeley, CA. These screen shots of IKE’s many disclosures and disclaimers about its data gathering technology establish that IKE Kiosks capture user information and transfer it to its Third Party Partners.
Neither Mayor Todd Gloria’s July 7, 2023 Memo to the Honorable Council President Pro-Tern Monica Montgomery Steppe, nor the IKE Final Agreement Revised June 28, 2023, preclude the data gathering and transfer disclosed on IKE’s kiosks in Berkeley. Your agenda documents state the IKE agreement does not violate the TRUST ordinance. This promises nothing regarding IKE’s business practice of gathering users’ personal information and sharing it with and selling it to Third Party Partners, as it admits it does in Berkeley.

Scenic America Action Alert: Second of Three Votes on San Diego Digital Ad Kiosks Scheduled for Monday, July 17

7/15/2023

Picture
Dear Supporter,
The City Council will be meeting on Monday, July 17 to vote on the proposed partnership between the City of San Diego and IKE Smart Cities to bring visual pollution in the form of "digital wayfinding kiosks" to city sidewalks. This is the second of three votes on this proposal.
Your attendance and participation in this process is vital to make any attempt to defeat this measure. Prior meetings have shown little opposition to these digital ad kiosks, which require an exemption of San Diego law in order to allow digital signs in the right of way as well as off-premises advertising. There is a reason these signs require a change of the law, and through our collective action, we can show the City Council how unpopular this proposal actually is. Please consider the following measures to help us voice our opposition to this proposal:

  1. Submit a public comment via the city's webform by 8 AM Monday morning
  2. Attend the meeting in person:
    City Administration Building
    City Council Chambers- 12th Floor
    202 C Street San Diego, CA 92101
  3. Attend the meeting via Zoom
  4. Attend the meeting by phone: Dial 1-669-254 5252
    Webinar ID: 160 114 3486
With the second round of voting scheduled for Monday and a final vote in the coming weeks, your comments in opposition to this proposal matter now more than ever.

Sincerely,
Scenic San Diego
Scenic America
